On Jan 8, 2024, the US deployed the lunar lander Peregrine Mission One. Despite its successful take-off and separation, Peregrine was unable to reach the moon due to a critical "propulsion anomaly” caused by unknown damages. Peregrine had no choice but to re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere, where it burned itself up over the South Pacific. No remains—including those of the 70 people carried by Peregrine—survived.

And I found myself on this same day last year thinking of pine shadows on the wall outside the glass double door and later at night when it was almost dark inside she told me what had happened to the bird whose body was nowhere to be found.
